Benchmark of neutron production cross sections with Monte Carlo codes

Tsai, P.-E.; Lai, B.-L.*; Heilbronn, L. H.*; Sheu, R.-J.*

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research B, 416, p.16 - 29, 2018/02

 Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:30.05(Instruments & Instrumentation)

Fifteen thin target experiments were selected for this benchmark study of the neutron production cross sections. The studied cases include a mix combination of $$^{12}$$C, $$^{20}$$Ne $$^{40}$$Ar, $$^{84}$$Kr, and $$^{132}$$Xe ions bombarding $$^{nat}$$Li, $$^{nat}$$C, $$^{nat}$$Al, $$^{nat}$$Cu, and $$^{nat}$$Pb target with projectile energies between 135 and 600 MeV/nucleon. The experimental data were compared to the model calculations performed by (1) PHITS version 2.73 with JQMD and GEM model, (2) PHITS version 2.82 with revised JQMD 2.0 and GEM model, (3) FLUKA version 2011.2c with RQMD 2.4 and FLUKA's own de-excitation model, and (4) MCNP6 version 1.0 with LAQGSM 03.03 and GEM2 model. This study provides useful information not only for code users but also for model developers, and it will lead to future improvements of the PHITS - JQMD model for heavy-ion induced reactions, which is important for accelerator facilities, heavy-ion radiotherapy, and space radiation.

Program CCOM; Coupled-channels optical model calculation with automatic parameter search

Iwamoto, Osamu

JAERI-Data/Code 2003-020, 22 Pages, 2003/12

JAERI-Data-Code-2003-020.pdf:0.98MB

A new program of coupled-channels optical model calculation has been developed for the evaluation of actinide nuclei. The code is composed of by the modules having high independency and large flexibility. The code is written by C++ language using object oriented techniques. The program has capability of fitting of the parameters even for the several nuclei at the same time. The formulae required in the calculation, details of the numerical treatments and the input parameters are described. The examples of the input file and the output are also shown.

Re-evaluation of neutron nuclear data for $$^{129}$$I and $$^{143}$$Nd

Nakagawa, Tsuneo; Hasegawa, Akira

JAERI-Research 2003-020, 46 Pages, 2003/09

JAERI-Research-2003-020.pdf:1.55MB

The evaluated nuclear data for $$^{129}$$I and $$^{143}$$Nd stored in JENDL-3.3 were investigated comparing with other evaluated data and experimental data. New experimental data were available especially for the capture cross sections of both nuclides. The parameters used in theoretical calculations were modified so as to reproduce those experimental data. The statistical model calculation was performed using the revised parameters. The resonance parameters were also revised so that the cross sections measured in the thermal energy region were reproduced well. The present results were compiled in the ENDF-6 format.

Development of tissue substitutes with high mass density

Kinase, Sakae; Noguchi, Hiroshi; Sakamoto, Yukio; Nakamura, Takashi*; Kimura, Masaya*

Proceedings of 1st Asian and Oceanic Congress for Radiation Protection (AOCRP-1) (CD-ROM), 10 Pages, 2002/10

It is necessary to develop suitable tissue substitutes for the respiratory tract phantom. In the present study, optimum amounts of additive in the base materials were calculated in accordance with the basic data method. On the basis of the method, tissue substitutes with high mass density were made on an experimental basis. The substitutes were examined for the photon transmissions using 16.6 keV K-Xrays from Nb-93m and 59.5 keV gamma-rays from Am-241. It was found that the experimental transmission curves of the tissue substitutes are in good agreement with the calculated ones. Furthermore, mass attenuation coefficients for the tissue substitutes of the JAERI torso phantom were evaluated. It was found that the tissue substitutes are suitable as phantom materials and can simulate the body tissues defined in ICRP Publication.23.
